Freiberg Instruments expanded its international presence with the opening of a new office in Shanghai in January 2020. The location marked an important step into mainland China and created a direct connection to customers, research institutions and technology partners across one of the world’s most dynamic industrial regions.

China and Southeast Asia play a central role in the development and production of advanced materials, semiconductors, photovoltaics and electronic components. These industries depend on precise measurement technologies, reliable process data and close technical collaboration.

By establishing a local presence in Shanghai, Freiberg Instruments moved closer to both existing and prospective customers in the region. The office strengthens communication across time zones, supports a better understanding of local requirements and facilitates the implementation of measurement solutions within research and production environments.

Supporting growing technology industries

The Shanghai office was established to support companies, universities and research institutes working in fields such as single-crystal growth and processing, semiconductor manufacturing, photovoltaics and materials research.

“Freiberg Instruments can see the exponential and enormous opportunities in China and South East Asia. I am thrilled to have an office opening that will surely offer more depth to our capabilities as we support growing Single Crystal Growth and Processing industries in the region,”

said Dr. Kay Dornich, CEO of Freiberg Instruments, at the opening of the new location.

Freiberg Instruments contributes advanced metrology and automation solutions for applications including crystal orientation, carrier lifetime and resistivity measurement, surface photovoltage spectroscopy and luminescence analysis.

Many of these applications require more than the delivery of a measurement instrument. Customers need systems that are adapted to their materials, processes and production infrastructure – supported by specialists who understand both the technology and its practical application.

The local team therefore provides a direct interface between customers in China and the interdisciplinary development, application and production teams at the company’s headquarters in Freiberg, Germany.

Combining local expertise with German engineering

The Shanghai location brings Freiberg Instruments’ measurement expertise closer to the regional market while maintaining a close connection to research, development and manufacturing in Germany.

This combination enables the company to respond more effectively to specific technical requirements, coordinate projects across locations and provide reliable support throughout the complete system lifecycle – from the initial application discussion and system configuration to installation, training and technical service.

The office also strengthens cooperation with universities and research institutes. Direct exchange with scientific partners helps identify emerging measurement challenges and supports the transfer of new methods from fundamental research into industrial applications.

A long-term commitment to the region

The opening of the Shanghai office reflects Freiberg Instruments’ long-term commitment to its customers and partners in China. What began as a new regional office has developed into the company’s China Sales & Support Hub, providing local expertise and direct access to Freiberg Instruments’ global capabilities.

By combining proximity to customers with advanced metrology and automation expertise, the Shanghai team helps create measurement solutions that improve accuracy, efficiency and process reliability.

The expansion demonstrates Freiberg Instruments’ ambition to grow internationally without losing the close, collaborative approach that defines its work: understanding individual requirements, developing tailored solutions and supporting customers wherever innovation takes shape.
