Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) is widely used to determine when minerals such as quartz were last exposed to light. The single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol is a key method for estimating the absorbed dose and calculating the age of a sample. Without consistent reporting, however, differences in measurement procedures, parameters and data analysis can make scientific results difficult to evaluate and compare.
DIN 44808-1 addresses this challenge by defining clear requirements for documenting measurement procedures, equivalent-dose determination, dose estimation and age calculation. Published in German and English, DIN 44808-1:2026-03 replaces the previous technical specification DIN/TS 44808-1:2022-03. Its publication marks an important step toward more reliable and internationally comparable luminescence dating data.
