About the Project

The InnoAktiv project addresses key challenges and interactions across battery cell activation. Research focuses on questions such as: How do electrolyte selection and filling affect process duration? How should a second electrolyte filling step be designed to improve cell performance? And can an optimized initial filling eliminate the need for a second filling step altogether?

The project also investigates the interactions between electrolyte materials, filling processes, formation and degassing. Further research explores how formation protocols can be optimized to achieve a 50% reduction in processing time and how data-driven modeling approaches can significantly shorten self-discharge testing during the aging step.

Freiberg Instruments’ Contribution

Within InnoAktiv, Freiberg Instruments is developing innovative equipment and process solutions for the formation of large-format lithium-ion cells and demonstrating them in research production environments close to industrial series production.

Building on extensive experience in advanced metrology electronics and software solutions, combined with expertise in charging electronics, formation systems and process control, Freiberg Instruments is working to fundamentally optimize the currently energy- and time-intensive formation process.
