Photo/ Optically Stimulated Luminescence (PSL + OSL)

Photostimulated Luminescence (PSL) Used in wide range of dosimetric applications. Photostimulated Luminescence (PSL or POSL) is also called Optically Simulated Luminescence (OSL) and can be used for a wide range of dosimetric purposes. It is gaining importance in radiation protection dosimetry, personal dosimetry, medical dosimetry and space dosimetry due to the high sensitivity of some phosphors and is a good alternative for film dosimetry. Infrared stimulated Luminescence dating of feldspar (IRSL)

Infrared stimulated Luminescence dating Many types of sediment do not contain quartz and for dating the light exposure to light of such sediments Infrared stimulated Luminescence (IRSL) is used. Due to higher saturation doses the age range is larger than for OSL Internal dose rates in K-feldspar reduce dependency on external dose rate and water content Might suffer from an anomalous signal loss which leads to age underestimation Post-Infrared Infrared luminescence (p-IRIR) allows the dating of Middle Pleistocene sediments Preusser, F., Muru, M., and Rosentau, A. Optically stimulated Luminescence dating of quartz (OSL)

Optically stimulated Luminescence dating of quartz Exposure to light reduces the Optically stimulated Luminescence (OSL) signal from quartz and provides the basis for dating the event of light exposure and thus the sedimentation. Age range Few years (depending on signal intensity and sensitivity of equipment for which the lexsyg systems are especially developed) Up to ~150-200,000 years (depending on dosimetry) Sediment types Aeolian sediments like dunes or loess are suited very well Lacustrine and fluvial deposits can be dated Glaciogenic sediments are difficult Used for Geomorphological reconstruction Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction Earth quake history River system reconstruction Chronostratigraphy Stimulation wavelengths for quartz Blue Green UV Murray AS & Wintle AG (2000) Luminescence dating of quartz using an improved single-aliquot regenerative-dose protocol. Flint and other heated rocks

Flint and other heated rocks When rocks have been heated in antiquity the time of the last exposure to high temperatures can be determined Rocks containing amorphous/microcrystalline SiO 2 can be dated by luminescence methods when they have been heated to approximately 400°C. Such temperatures, whether accidentally or deliberately, are easily achieved in hearths and therefore the dated event relates to the heating of the flint in a prehistoric fire.
