Infrared stimulated Luminescence dating of feldspar (IRSL)

Infrared stimulated Luminescence dating Many types of sediment do not contain quartz and for dating the light exposure to light of such sediments Infrared stimulated Luminescence (IRSL) is used. Due to higher saturation doses the age range is larger than for OSL Internal dose rates in K-feldspar reduce dependency on external dose rate and water content Might suffer from an anomalous signal loss which leads to age underestimation Post-Infrared Infrared luminescence (p-IRIR) allows the dating of Middle Pleistocene sediments Preusser, F., Muru, M., and Rosentau, A. Optically stimulated Luminescence dating of quartz (OSL)

Optically stimulated Luminescence dating of quartz Exposure to light reduces the Optically stimulated Luminescence (OSL) signal from quartz and provides the basis for dating the event of light exposure and thus the sedimentation. Age range Few years (depending on signal intensity and sensitivity of equipment for which the lexsyg systems are especially developed) Up to ~150-200,000 years (depending on dosimetry) Sediment types Aeolian sediments like dunes or loess are suited very well Lacustrine and fluvial deposits can be dated Glaciogenic sediments are difficult Used for Geomorphological reconstruction Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction Earth quake history River system reconstruction Chronostratigraphy Stimulation wavelengths for quartz Blue Green UV Murray AS & Wintle AG (2000) Luminescence dating of quartz using an improved single-aliquot regenerative-dose protocol. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR)

Electron Spin Resonance A standard for many dosimetric application. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR/EPR) is an important tool for fundamental studies in many fields. Radicals are studied with ESR in life sciences, environmental chemistry, research in food safety/quality, the petrochemistry, bioinorganic chemistry and many more, together with studies on metal compounds, antioxides, etc. ESR is the standard for many dosimetric application in e.g. electron beam and neutron dosimetry of alanine tablets to determine irradiation doses. Solid state physics applications include the investigation of paramagnetic centers and their orientation within a crystal. Time resolved luminescence

Time resolved luminescence To investigate charge carrier dynamics, e.g. lifetimes Time resolved luminescence measurements allow the determination of the life-times of electron states and thus description of the kinetics involved. This allows the correlation to different centres and discrimination of processes. Employing excitation pulses of appropriate time length with adequate off-times for luminescence detection allows the separation of different luminescence signals, which might be related to different minerals (e.g. feldspar and quartz) and can be used for determining two different doses for a single sample (e.g. pulsed OSL for dating purposes). Spatially resolved luminescence

Spatially resolved luminescence Spatial differentiation of luminescence signals for mineral specific analysis and hot spot identification Measuring luminescence with EMCCD camera allows for the spatial differentiation of luminescence signals . Different minerals, mineral phases, radiation hot spots etc. can be determined in granular or solid samples and provide information on small scale differences of the radiation fields, or the material inhomogeneities (e.g. semiconductors). Luminescence spectroscopy

Luminescence spectroscopy To investigate the luminescence properties of materials. Luminescence spectroscopy is used to investigate the luminescence properties of materials and thus allow more precise definitions e.g. of measurement parameters (e.g. detection ranges). It can help to better define the involved traps and centres, and contributes to the understanding of luminescence processes. Food Irradiation Control

Food Irradiation Control using TL and PSL/OSL techniques European standards DIN EN 13751 | DIN EN 1788 Food stuff often is irradiated with ionizing radiation for sterilisation purposes. This requires the detection and estimates of the applied doses. The attached mineral dust or the food itself serves as dosimeter. TL/OSL to detect irradiation of e.g. spices Presence/absence of signal specific features shows the irradiation Dose estimates are possible for some materials Jo, Y., Sanyal, B., Chung, N., Lee, H.-G., Park, Y., Park, H.-J., and Kwon, J.-H. Neutron dosimetry

Neutron dosimetry Accelerators, space dosimetry, high-LET Active dosimeters, like rem-mteters, superheated emulsions and electronic personal dosemeters can be used to measure neutron fields. But frequently passive dosemeters are used to determine equivalent doses in neutron fields from particle accelerators for quantitative and qualitative measurement. Especially Thermoluminescence (T) with LiF-dosemeters and recently Photo Stimulated Luminescence (PSL) with AlO- and LiB-dosemeters (see TL, OSL, PSL, Clinical dosimetry) are studied for radiation protection purposes and the determination of neutron irradiation doses.
